Everything below concerns gastric juice. We keep the language plain, cite what the science says, and separate well-supported claims from open questions.
Updated 2026-05-06. Numbers and descriptions here follow the published literature rather than marketing material.
Doses in the literature are usually expressed in micrograms or nanograms per kilogram of body weight. Investigators have administered the peptide by several routes, including injection and oral delivery, depending on the question asked. Route and dose vary widely across studies, which complicates direct comparison of results. Many papers report effects at low doses, but the absence of a standardized protocol limits generalization. Reporting practice differs between research groups.
Some properties, such as the peptide's sequence and molecular mass, are firmly established. Other claims, particularly about mechanism and clinical benefit, remain open questions. Proposed mechanisms include effects on nitric oxide signaling and on cell migration, but these are hypotheses supported by limited evidence. Reviewers often note that the field lacks large controlled human trials. Positive animal findings are best treated as signals for further study rather than as settled conclusions.
Most published studies examine BPC-157 in animal models rather than in humans. Common subjects include rats and mice, and researchers often use models of tissue injury, surgery, or induced inflammation. Reported endpoints include healing rates, blood vessel formation, and markers of tissue repair. These designs provide controlled comparisons, but findings in animals do not automatically transfer to people. Human clinical data remain limited and are frequently described as preliminary.
BPC 157 is a synthetic peptide built from fifteen amino acids. The letters stand for body protection compound, and the number is a laboratory code rather than a description of any biological feature. Its single-letter sequence is GEPPPGKPADDAGLV, which corresponds to a calculated mass near 1419.5 daltons. The material is produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis and is distributed as a lyophilized powder, not as a purified extract from a natural source.
Early work on this family of molecules examined fractions of human gastric juice, where a larger protein was reported to protect gastrointestinal tissue in animal models. BPC 157 was designed as a shorter, more stable fragment of that protein and then studied on its own. The peptide itself is not a normal dietary component and is not present in the human body in meaningful quantities. Descriptions of its origin therefore refer to the research lineage of a laboratory molecule rather than to an endogenous or nutritional substance.
The sequence contains an unusually high proportion of proline and glycine, which limits regular secondary structure and contributes to solubility in aqueous media. The compound dissolves readily in water and in normal saline. Because it is a peptide, digestive enzymes are expected to break it down if it is swallowed, a consideration that influences the routes of administration used in animal experiments. Detailed conformational data remain limited, and published structural models are largely computational.

BPC-157 is a synthetic pentadecapeptide whose sequence is commonly given as Gly-Glu-Pro-Pro-Pro-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ala-Asp-Asp-Ala-Gly-Leu-Val. It is described in the literature as a fragment of a larger protein found in human gastric juice, referred to as body protection compound. The peptide was first characterized in the early 1990s by a research group in Zagreb, Croatia. Its molecular formula is C62H98N16O22 and its monoisotopic mass is approximately 1419 daltons.
Supplied material is typically a lyophilized white to off-white powder. The peptide is freely soluble in water and in common aqueous buffers, which allows it to be handled as a stock solution. Because the sequence contains no cysteine, disulfide cross-linking is not a route of degradation. The absence of aromatic residues means ultraviolet absorbance at 280 nm is minimal, so quantification usually relies on peptide bond absorbance near 214 nm or on amino acid analysis.
Common synonyms in catalogs include pentadecapeptide BPC 157, BPC157, and the full sequence name. A CAS registry number in the 137525-51-0 range is frequently listed, though the assignment should be verified against the supplier certificate of analysis. The name itself is not a pharmacopoeial designation, and there is no standardized international nonproprietary name. Distinguishing genuine material from related fragments generally requires mass spectrometry, since several truncated sequences share similar chromatographic behavior.
Lyophilized peptide is normally kept at minus twenty degrees Celsius or colder, away from light and moisture. Powder held under those conditions is widely treated as stable for long periods, although published stability studies for this exact sequence are sparse and often come from suppliers rather than independent laboratories. Once dissolved, solutions are generally handled cold and used within a short window, because peptide bonds can hydrolyze over time. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles are usually avoided to limit losses, and exact shelf-life figures depend on the buffer and the concentration involved.
Purity is ordinarily reported as a percentage from reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, where the area of the main peak is compared with the total peak area. Identity is confirmed by mass spectrometry, since the measured mass can be checked against the value calculated from the sequence. Some certificates also include amino acid analysis or sequence confirmation by tandem mass spectrometry. A single purity number does not describe the profile of related impurities, so the underlying chromatogram and spectrum usually carry more information than the headline figure.
Published studies on BPC-157 are dominated by animal models. Commonly used endpoints include healing of surgically induced lesions in the stomach, tendon-to-bone attachment after transection, and recovery from experimentally induced vascular or intestinal damage. Many of these reports come from a small number of research groups, and the peptide is often described as acting across a wide range of tissue types. That breadth is itself a point of discussion, since one molecule influencing many unrelated systems is unusual.
Human data are far more limited than animal data. A small number of clinical reports exist, generally with few participants and without the randomization or blinding expected in later-phase trials. No large, independently replicated human trial has appeared in the indexed peer-reviewed literature. Statements about effects in people therefore rest on extrapolation from animal work rather than on direct evidence, and the strength of that extrapolation remains an open question rather than a settled matter.
== Biosimilars == In December 2020, the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) of the European Medicines Agency adopted a positive opinion, recommending the granting of a marketing authorization for the medicinal product Kixelle, intended for the treatment of diabetes. The applicant for this medicinal product is Mylan IRE Healthcare Limited. Kixelle was approved for medical use in the European Union in February 2021. Kixelle was renamed to Kirsty. Trurapi was approved for medical use in Canada in October 2020. Truvelog and Truvelog Solostar were approved for medical use in Australia in October 2020. In October 2021, Kirsty was approved for medical use in Canada. In February 2022, the CHMP adopted a positive opinion, recommending the granting of a marketing authorization for the medicinal product Truvelog Mix 30, intended for the treatment of diabetes. The applicant for this medicinal product is sanofi-aventis groupe. It was approved for medical use in the European Union in April 2022. In January 2024, the European Commission withdrew the marketing authorization for Truvelog Mix 30 (insulin aspart) in the European Union. The withdrawal was at the request of the marketing authorization holder, Sanofi Winthrop Industrie, which notified the European Commission of its decision to permanently discontinue the marketing of the product for commercial reasons. In February 2025, insulin aspart-szjj, sold under the brand names Merilog and Merilog Solostar, is a biosimilar to Novolog that was approved for medical use in the United States in February 2025.
The commission noted that such incidents in July and August 2008 "could no longer be countered by the JPKF" and "reactivating the peacekeeping mechanism was not an alternative means of redress available for Georgia." It also noted that Georgian attack on Tskhinvali on 7 August was a response, albeit not proportionate, to South Ossetian attacks in the following paragraphs:
== Treatment == This applies once an infestation is established. In many circles the first response to cutaneous myiasis once the breathing hole has formed is to cover the air hole thickly with petroleum jelly. Lack of oxygen then forces the larva to the surface, where it can more easily be dealt with. In a clinical or veterinary setting there may not be time for such tentative approaches, and the treatment of choice might be more direct, with or without an incision. First, the larva must be eliminated through pressure around the lesion and the use of forceps. Secondly, the wound must be cleaned and disinfected. Further control is necessary to avoid further reinfestation. Livestock may be treated prophylactically with slow-release boluses containing ivermectin, which can provide long-term protection against the development of the larvae. Sheep also may be dipped, a process that involves drenching the animals in persistent insecticide to poison the larvae before they develop into a problem.

Wallerian degeneration is an active process of degeneration that results when a nerve fiber is cut or crushed and the part of the axon distal to the injury (which in most cases is farther from the neuron's cell body) degenerates. A related process of dying back or retrograde degeneration known as 'Wallerian-like degeneration' occurs in many neurodegenerative diseases, especially those where axonal transport is impaired such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and Alzheimer's disease. Primary culture studies suggest that a failure to deliver sufficient quantities of the essential axonal protein NMNAT2 is a key initiating event. Some studies also have found irreversible electroporation, a potential clinical treatment being researched in porcine models to determine efficacy to treat spinal cord injuries, has contributed to Wallerian degeneration of lumbar nerve roots. Wallerian degeneration occurs after axonal injury in both the peripheral nervous system (PNS) and central nervous system (CNS). It occurs in the section of the axon distal to the site of injury and usually begins within 24–36 hours of a lesion. Prior to degeneration, the distal section of the axon tends to remain electrically excitable. After injury, the axonal skeleton disintegrates, and the axonal membrane breaks apart. Axonal degeneration is followed by degradation of the myelin sheath and infiltration by macrophages. The macrophages, accompanied by Schwann cells, serve to clear the debris from the degeneration.
transport protein Also transporter. Any transmembrane protein which functions by permitting the movement of particular molecules, proteins, or other substances across a membrane, either actively or passively and in either or both directions (by which they may be further subclassified into uniporters, antiporters, and symporters). Channel proteins and nuclear pores are examples of transport proteins.
==== Artificial Pancreas (AP) Systems ==== In 2006, Breakthrough T1D launched the Artificial Pancreas Consortium, allocating $6 million in grants to investigate the benefits of technology controlling blood-glucose levels to accelerate the availability of the artificial pancreas (AP). AP systems integrate three components—a CGM, an insulin pump, and an algorithm—to measure blood sugar, then calculate and administer, or withhold, insulin with minimal user input. In 2016, the FDA approved the first hybrid closed-loop, or AP, system.

The stolon is ready to harvest two to three months after planting. It must be harvested before flowering. Harvesting the stolon is done by manual labor. For this step, the field is not drained. The stolon is pulled out of the water by pulling and shaking the young leaves in the shallow water. The first leaves and flowers can be harvested three months after planting. Flowers can be picked every two days during summer and every three days during the colder season. Four months after planting, the production of flowers has its climax. The harvest of flowers is usually done by hand for three to four months. Seeds and seed pods can be harvested when they turn black four to eight months after planting. After sun drying for two to three days, they are processed by mechanical tools to separate seed coats and embryos. The rhizomes mature to a suitable stage for eating in approximately six to nine months. Early varieties are harvested in July until September and late varieties from October until March, after the ponds or fields are drained. The large, starch-rich rhizomes are easy to dig out of the drained soil. In small-scale production, they are harvested by hand using fork-like tools. In Japan and on bigger farms, manual labour harvesting is fully replaced by machines.
==== Amnion ==== The amnion is avascular, meaning it does not contain its own blood vessels. Therefore, it must obtain necessary nutrients and oxygen from nearby chorionic and amniotic fluid, and fetal surface vessels. The amnion is characterised by cuboidal and columnar epithelial layers. The columnar cells are located in the vicinity of the placenta, whereas the cuboidal cells are found in the periphery. During early pregnancy, the amnionic epithelium is sparsely covered in microvilli, which increase in number throughout pregnancy. The function of this microvillous surface is associated with a densely-packed glycocalix with anionic binding sites; these are thought to be involved with intra-amnionic lipid synthesis. This amnionic epithelium is connected to a basement membrane, which is then attached by filaments to a connective tissue layer.
== Ideology == The ideas of the Black Consciousness Movement were not developed solely by Biko, but through lengthy discussions with other black students who were rejecting white liberalism. Biko was influenced by his reading of authors like Frantz Fanon, Malcolm X, Léopold Sédar Senghor, James Cone, and Paulo Freire. The Martinique-born Fanon, in particular, has been cited as a profound influence over Biko's ideas about liberation. Biko's biographer Xolela Mangcu cautioned that it would be wrong to reduce Biko's thought to an interpretation of Fanon, and that the impact of "the political and intellectual history of the Eastern Cape" had to be appreciated too. Additional influences on Black Consciousness were the United States–based Black Power movement, and forms of Christianity like the activist-oriented black theology.

Human data are limited. Most evidence comes from animal experiments and from small or uncontrolled reports. The absence of large trials means clinical effects and safety are not firmly established.
Frequently measured outcomes include wound healing, blood vessel growth, and tissue repair markers. Some work examines gastrointestinal protection. The choice of endpoint depends on the model used.
Different routes of administration and different animal models require different amounts. Studies also use varied timelines and measurement methods. This variation makes it difficult to combine results into a single standardized figure.
It is a synthetic peptide. Its design was inspired by a fragment of a protein found in human gastric juice, but the fifteen-amino-acid molecule itself is made in a laboratory and is not a normal component of food or of human tissue in appreciable amounts.
